Most of us grew up in families with rigidly defined gender roles and expectations. It is common to believe that a person's gender is directly tied to their body parts. In many families, it is required that all members of the family share in a common set of core beliefs or values. Exploring one's sexual orientation or gender expression can be seen as going against the values or beliefs of one's family.
